For eight years, Daniel and Yacouba met monthly—sometimes over coffee, sometimes in deep discussion—exchanging ideas on how to drive real change in the nonprofit sector. Their conversations always revolved around innovation, problem-solving, and better ways to support organizations dedicated to serving people. 

Then, during one of these coffee chats, they had a realization: Nonprofits needed a practical guide to understanding and using AI. While technology was transforming industries, many mission-driven organizations struggled to access and implement AI-driven solutions. That’s when the idea for their book, Understanding and Using AI: A Resource for Nonprofit Leaders, was born.

But they knew a book alone wouldn’t be enough. The more they talked, the clearer it became—nonprofits needed not just knowledge, but hands-on education, training, and ongoing support to truly harness AI’s potential. So, they turned their vision into action, creating CENA – the Centre for Excellence in Nonprofit AI.

More than an organization, CENA is a movement. It empowers nonprofits to embrace AI, enhance their impact, and create lasting change in their communities. What began as a simple, coffee-fueled conversation has grown into a mission-driven initiative dedicated to equipping nonprofits with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to leverage AI for good.
